School History

Prior to 1961, the parish of Laverton didn’t have a place to worship, so the Catholic community associated itself with parishes in Werribee or Altona, whilst some chose to attend Mass at the R.A.A.F. Chapel in Laverton. St. Martin De Porres school opened, closed and re-opened in 1972. The Catholic population outgrew this school site and a second school, Queen of Peace Primary School, was opened in 1982. Two permanent places of worship exist in the parish, one being at St. Martin de Porres, Laverton and the other at Queen of Peace in Altona Meadows. We also use the Chapel at Point Cook RAAF Base for the faith community of Point Cook at 9:00am each Sunday. Sunday Mass occurs once a month on the Stella Maris school site.

The area is exploding with the number of housing developments being opened up and the parish boundaries were extended earlier in 1999 to include Aviation Road, Hacketts Lane to the highway as well as the Boardwalk Estate. In response to this growth, land was purchased early in 1999 and the building of a third school in the parish of Laverton, Lumen Christi commenced in August, 1999. We are situated in Point Cook Road, opposite the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Course. In response to growth around the Point Cook Road/Boardwalk areas Stella Maris, our fourth Catholic primary school commenced at the beginning of the 2006 school year and is situated in Innisfail Estate. A 5th school, St Mary of the Cross Primary School in Saltwater opened for the beginning of the 2014 school year.

Lumen Christi, Catholic Primary School commenced operations on Thursday, January 27th 2000, with a staff committed to offering the highest standard of Catholic education to the children enrolled from Grades Prep to Grade 6. We opened with a completed Administration Building, Outside Amenities Block, Re-locatable classrooms and landscaping, play areas and parking facilities complete. Our four-pod classroom was finished and ready for occupation for the beginning of Term 2, 2000. 2002 also saw Stage 2 of our Building project funded by local and Federal money. During this building stage we added a multi-purpose hall, kitchen and storage areas, as well as Part 1 of a classroom block that contains three learning areas, indoor toilets and kitchen area. Stage 3 Building Stage was undertaken and completed during 2007 and the scope of works included 3 learning areas, a Sports Stadium, Teacher car parking and street parking for drop-off/pick-up purposes in Kirkstone Rd. The focus of development in 2008 was on our outside recreation area for students, which includes a regulation junior soccer pitch as well as other play areas all using artificial turf. This was a long-awaited acquisition for our school community. 2009 saw all schools receiving unexpected monies through the Federal Government BER Program. Through these projects we have seen the access way from Point Cook Road extended through to Kirkstone Rd to ease car congestion and the construction of eight learning areas, a library, theatrette and computer lab. These started in June/July 2009 and were completed in October, 2010. The Parents & Friends have fundraised for an outside environment, that compliments these building projects.

We attempt to carefully structure grades so that we are able to accommodate families that move into our catchment area during the year. It is our aim to enrol children with the minimum of disruption to existing classes. We currently have 28 permanent grades - 4 classes at each grade level. Our projected enrolment for 2022 is between 700 - 715.
