Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School takes its name from the Latin words Lumen Christi, which mean “Light of Christ.”
The phrase comes from the liturgy of the Catholic Church, most prominently proclaimed during the Easter Vigil. As the Paschal Candle is carried into a darkened church, the priest or deacon sings “Lumen Christi” (The Light of Christ), and the congregation responds “Deo gratias” (Thanks be to God).
This powerful moment symbolises:
Christ as the light who overcomes darkness
Hope and new life
Faith guiding the community forward
The title also echoes themes found in the Church’s teachings, including the Second Vatican Council document Lumen Gentium (“Light of the Nations”), which speaks of Christ as the light of the world.
For our community, Lumen Christi represents:
Christ at the centre of all we do
Learning that enlightens minds and hearts
A community called to shine with compassion, courage and hope
Students growing to be lights in their families and the wider world
The name is both a reminder and a mission that each child is invited to walk in the light of Christ and to reflect that light through their actions, learning and relationships.
